Unfortunately, as women, we find ourselves overwhelmed most of the time. We wear too many hats. We are wives, mothers, friends, nurturers, grandmothers, and we have outside jobs. We have to carpool kids, go grocery shopping, clean the house, make dinner, and get ready for tomorrow and on and on. The list is endless! And because there is so much to do, we begin to feel like we are failing.
According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, the definition of rest “is to stop doing a particular activity for a period of time in order to relax and get back your strength.” How many of us really do that? We don’t, because there is that little voice in our heads that keeps reminding us that there IS SO MUCH TO DO! We are programmed to be perfectionists and be everything to everybody. We prioritize every single thing the same way … IMPORTANT!
The only thing we don’t consider important is ourselves. We are like that Energizer Bunny, and we go and go and go! We go until we become so frazzled that we start missing deadlines, connections with family and friends, and we become sick, cranky and burned out. This is the time to ask yourself if you are devoting your time to the right things and are you doing anything you really love?
Hebrews 4:4 says, “On the seventh day God rested from all his work.” After He worked so hard for six days, He took the time to refresh, relax and perhaps get a little more sleep. Ladies, you need to learn how to disengage, to refresh and reenergize your mind, your soul and your body. You need to figure out what motivates you, what can guide you to become more beneficial and fulfilled.
First and foremost, if you are one of those women who work an extreme amount of overtime at your job, make a definite plan to set specific hours for yourself and stick to them. Next, prioritize your tasks as crucial, key but not crucial, or neither crucial nor key. If this is the case, then understand that this can wait until tomorrow. The point is … make time for yourself and your own life.
As women, we don’t often make time to sit in silence and reflect on our own thoughts. We don’t just sit and breathe. We do not take care of ourselves. And the truth is, if you don’t nurture yourself, you cannot be your best self for your family, your friends or your workplace. You need to take a step back and stop trying to do all things perfectly. Figure out what is important. Put down your phone and learn how to schedule free time for yourself.
Taking a break from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life is the best medicine for healing your mental health, your physical health and your spirit. Go get a massage! Get your nails done! Take a walk! Take a nap! Go shopping! Have lunch with a girlfriend! Sit and read a book! Whatever you love to do, schedule time for it and set yourself up for success.
For women, slowing down is not easy. It make us feel guilty. However, as women, we need time to recharge, refuel and REST! The more time you are able to make for yourself, the happier you will become. And as you become happy, so too will the people around you.
Life is life. Some days are more hectic than others, but if you learn how to schedule time for yourself, enjoy that quiet time; then you will find life to be so much more fulfilling. Achieving a more restful and complete life may not be easy, but here are some ideas to help you to make your life less tumultuous and untidy:
Learn to delegate and give up what you can.
Step back, make a wish list and then schedule time for those things.
Schedule your breaks and enjoy holidays.
Get up and walk around and stretch.
Unclutter your life.
Remember that relaxation and rest helps us to become more productive and creative. It motivates us and stops procrastination. It gives us focus. So today, challenge yourself to be more productive, happier and to carve out that special time … quiet time, family time, me time.
